In conversation with Imad Itani: Over the past few years, Imad Itani has served as both a judge and a panelist at Startup City. Having witnessed the event and a significant rise in the number of participating startups, Itani has noted how such startups have matured over the years and diversified in their services, with Startup City having attracted innovative construction startups and positioned Dubai as a premier innovation hub on the global stage.

Among the startups showcased at Startup City, several particularly stood out due to their innovative solutions, strong team and outstanding pitches. These startups not only presented creative ideas but also effectively addressed real problems aligned with the focus areas of the event. Noteworthy mentions include:

  • Angelswings: A drone data platform for reality capture and logistics coordination.
  • Verofax: Specializes in operational excellence and sustainable supply chain validation.
  • Metguard: Develops anti-rust material to protect and extend the lifespan of metals.
  • Carbon Limit: Produces concrete made with CaptureCrete that attracts CO₂ pollution from the surrounding atmosphere and stores it permanently through carbonization.

Trends in the construction sector startup scene

Several trends have been impacting the startup scene within the construction sector. There has been a remarkable surge in construction startups, accompanied by an increase in construction-focused venture capitalists seeking regional partnerships. Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on sustainability. Key trends include consolidation, integration and data analysis. Efforts to enhance productivity through progress measurement and specialized field solutions are also gaining traction.

Effective collaboration between contractors and startups

Contractors and startups complement each other effectively. Contractors face significant industry challenges accumulated over many years, while startups bring speed and agile methodology in product development. Contractors possess valuable industry know-how and subject matter experts who can provide crucial input and guidance to startups, helping them tailor their offerings and focus more effectively.

The most effective mode of engagement is through dedicated innovation or digital teams. It's essential for companies to adopt an open-minded approach, willingly sharing their challenges. Simultaneously, startups should prioritize partnering with companies genuinely committed to their innovation journey, prepared to invest time and resources in testing and implementing novel solutions.

Scope for innovation

Startups are often praised for their ability to bring innovation to the table. They have multiple advantages, including the speed of development and the ability to improve their offerings to suit their partners. By leveraging feedback from multiple partners, startups can address common industry challenges, crafting scalable solutions to meet the expansive needs of the industry. Startups also benefit from crossing boundaries and providing their solutions globally.

Many solutions have been developed by startups, including digital solutions, AI and data analytics, sustainable products, reporting methods, robotics, modular construction and 3D printing.

Technology plays a crucial role in driving innovation within the construction industry. A significant wave of technology startups has emerged in recent years, with some technologies beginning to mature. Multiple startups are attempting to solve similar problems, indicating areas where significant development is still possible. Key areas include sustainability, data analysis and robotics.

Future opportunities

Looking ahead, the construction industry holds great potential for transformation. Early phases of this transformation have already been witnessed. Forward-thinking companies that work closely with their ecosystem and partners, including startups, have developed faster than their peers. Startups are an integral part of the construction ecosystem, adding value by working alongside construction companies and the supply chain.

Hence, construction technology startups could help improve construction schedules, increase labor efficiency, reduce overall material costs and enhance quality and safety. As companies integrate innovation into their culture, supporting and creating opportunities for startups can be exceptionally beneficial for both parties.
